2024

Apiam (ASX listed company) is Australia’s largest rural and regional veterinary group providing services to the companion animal and livestock industries which includes Dairy, Beef, Pig, Sheep and Poultry.

I was hired to work with the in-house product owners and dev team to overhaul existing portals and apply a better user experience for both customers and in-house vets.

Through workshops, competitor analysis and customer interviews, and farm visits, and understanding the customers' day-to-day workflow on the farm, I was able to highlight some pain points and suggest new features that customers were looking for.

Surprisingly, given the perceived non-tech-savvy, time-poor personas of the users, there was a real need to be able to quickly order products or look up medical conditions out in the field. In turn, we highlighted these main tasks very prominently for mobile and desktop.

I created a modular system so they could roll out the same features, changing the look-and-feel for all livestock portals. This created a consistent user experience whilst enabling the dev team to make global changes, given the size of the team that would be looking after these sites.

Once I presented these concepts to the executive tea,m we had approval to start rolling out these to other livestock types.

Some of the tasks I conducted were

  • Competitor analysis

  • Heuristic evaluation/UX audit

  • Customer interviews

  • Rapid prototyping

  • Customer farm visits

  • Hi-fidelity UI screens

  • Usability testing

  • QA feedback using bugherd

This is still to go live however, the customer is very happy with what I have presented, given the limited budget.

Once these are live, we are aiming to measure our success by;

  • Increase in conversion

  • Upselling of products

  • Time on website

  • Increase in enquiries to register for the portal

  • Decrease in calls to customer support
